Snow-shoes spread your weight over a wider area, letting you walk through deeper snow without sinking too far. The indigenous Sámi people used similar shoes for hunting trips, to help them get around in tricky terrain.

Modern snow-shoes

They’re now used for fun and you can experience snowshoeing for yourself - use the straps to secure them to your boots. You’ll have two ski poles to help you balance, so you can concentrate on the nature and the beauty around you.

Snow-shoeing is generally slower than walking, but they let you go where you like - uphill, downhill or into fresh snow.
Using snow-shoes is easy. All you need is reasonable balance and your thermal suit, which you’ll get when you arrive in Lapland.
If you’re a beginner, it’s best to stick to the marked trails.
If you feel like making fresh tracks through deep and unbroken snow, you could climb a small peak for some fantastic views, but your guide will be with you the whole time.
There are different snowshow styles but most have spikes on the bottom to avoid slipping and will let your heel move up and down to make it easier to walk. The snow-shoe is also turned up at the front for going downhill.
